The Fifth Element is a film from 1997, directed by Luc Besson, constituting one of his first big international successes. Indeed, French directors are rarely successful outside France. Even rarer are those who invest in films with very large budgets.
After the success of his films The Big Blue and Leon - the latter having already been a first success at the American box office - Luc Besson returned to direct an audacious intergalactic adventure that left its mark on the minds of the public with its imagination, its action and its omnipresent humor.
To make sure it leaves a significant impact on memories, The Fifth Element will mark Besson's second collaboration with Gary Oldman, who previously played an antagonist in Leon. Moreover, the cast will be composed of Bruce Willis as the main character, one of the first interpretations (noticed) of Milla Jovovich, as well as the presence of Ian Holmes or Chris Tucker among the prominent secondary characters of the film.
The story begins in 1914 when an archaeologist in Egypt is about to discover a secret room. This one contains the five elements. Elements created to destroy an evil galactic entity called Evil. The latter, wishing to eliminate all that lives in the universe, appears once every 5,000 years to commit its works. The Mondoshawans, a noble and wise alien race, created these weapons for humanity to use when the time came. However, the weapons must be kept secret so that no one gets hold of them and risks compromising the only means available to defeat evil.
As these weapons are about to be discovered, the Mondoshawans manifest themselves, take with them the 5 elements to protect them, and pledge to return in 300 years, when Evil appears again.
In the 23rd century, as The Evil begins to show the first signs of its return, the Mondoshawans, who came to bring the elements, are eliminated on their journey to Earth. Only the Fifth Element manages to escape and be rebuilt, taking on the appearance of a beautiful young girl. She meets Korben Dallas, a cab driver and former member of the Special Forces, and leads him on a quest to find the other four elements and reunite them before the evil strikes.
In their journey, they will have to face the fearsome Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, the Mangalores mercenaries, and will make encounters that are each more striking than the last. The Fifth Element will feature Leeloo, who learns more about humanity as she learns more about it, to the point where she doubts the wisdom of saving it. Korben's unwavering and passionate support of her will however allow her to stay the course in her mission to save the universe from evil. Explosions and laughter will thus mix skillfully in this timeless space fresco dating from a quarter of a century ago and having marked the minds of several generations since its release.
