Yu Yu Hakushô is the first successful manga of Yoshihiro Togashi, mangaka who later became the author of Level E and the mythical Hunter x Hunter, the latter still being published since 1998. At a time when Shônens - these mangas for young boys - were living their golden age, Yu Yu Hakushô managed to be among the best titles of its time. What was, then, a challenge in the sense that the most mythical mangas of the time were competing with him.
Published in the same period and in the same magazine as Slam Dunk or the famous Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakushô was a resounding success in Japan, although a little less in the West where it sold very well. Yu Yu Hakushô started from a story with a daring premise; Yusuke Urameshi, a young delinquent, saves a child from a road accident by being hit in his place only to die in the first chapter. Botan, sent by the spirit world, tells him that his time has not come and that he will be able to come back to life if he manages to meet certain conditions; what Yusuke will manage to do thanks to the help of his friend and rival Kuwabara.
After these events, Enma Junior, son of the administrator of the spirit world, asks for Yusuke's help to investigate supernatural events related to demons in the human world. As he investigates, Yusuke will make more and more horrific discoveries while developing his supernatural powers. Trained by Genkai, with his comrades Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei, he will face different demonic factions to the point of compromising himself humanly after each new fight.
Indeed, Yu Yu Hakushô, starting from a classic postulate, will evolve towards a plot that is increasingly darker. Yoshihiro Togashi, at that time, was laying the first stones of the fantastic edifice that will constitute his work. A rather dark author, not hesitating to tackle mature and psychological themes, he pushed the Shônen world to its limits by proposing a work where the main character, in principle endowed with pure ideals, will end up not having any feelings for humans, to the point of suggesting to a demon that he should devour a human in order not to starve. Between the adventure and the fights, Yu Yu Hakushô presented an unhealthy human psyche that could make your blood run cold. The world of demons will be less and less good-natured as the volumes follow one another.
Any fan of this manga sensation of the 1990s will not be able to do without a Funko POP Yu Yu Hakushô collection. You will be able to find figurines of Hiei, or Funko POP versions of Kuwabara, Kurama or Genkai, the main characters of a manga - also distributed in anime - which had the merit to compete directly with Dragon Ball at the time when it was still being published. Getting acquainted with the Funko POP Yu Yu Hakushô collection is also the opportunity to discover a manga which is not well known in our countries and which deserves to be highlighted. You can then better promote it and remember it with Funko POP Yu Yu Hakushô figurines faithful to the characters of the work.
