Yusuke Urameshi is the main character of Yu Yu Hakushô. It is from his name that the title of Yoshihiro Togashi's first successful manga is taken. Yu Yu is a nickname of Yusuke where Hakushô refers to his journey. The title of the manga can be translated by Yu Yu's journey with all the nuances of the Japanese language.

Far from being a virtuous and clean hero, Yusuke Urameshi wants to be a small delinquent brawler but with a good heart. A good heart that will end up losing him: literally. While he threw himself on the road to save a child who was almost run over by a car, Yusuke was killed on the spot in the first chapter of the manga.

In front of this heroic impulse, Botan, guide of the world of the spirits, will leave him a chance to return in the world of the living if he manages to be heard. With the help of his rival and friend Kuwabara, Yusuke will manage to come back to life.

After that, he will become a Detective of the spirit world, assisting Botan who will assign him missions. These missions, then, having most often vocation to fight against demons coming from the Makai, a parallel demonic world where the inhabitants sometimes try to feed on humans.

During his adventures, later accompanied by Kuwabara, Yusuke will meet Kurama and Hiei, adversaries who will become his faithful allies. Together, the four of them will fight against the worst threats of the Makai by participating in the Dark Tournament. Then, they will return to the human world to foil the evil Sensui's plan. All this, before becoming the main belligerents in the war of the three kingdoms of Makai.

Very energetic and debonair, Yusuke will end up evolving progressively until he loses his humanity by being in contact with the world of demons. He will even suggest to Raizen, his demon ascendant, to devour humans to regain his strength. The character of Yusuke, in spite of his good looks, will nevertheless be nuanced as his life and death journey evolves.
