It's become one of the most essential licenses in animation: My Hero Academia returns to Funko POP with this first wave for 2024.
For this announcement, 10 figurines (8 + 2 specific variations) were unveiled. With characters "popified" for the very first time, to the delight of anime fans.
Here are the details of the announcement.
8 new figurines (+2 specific)
Taken from the SCA incident episode, in which the villains attack the Seconde A class with the aim of ambushing and eliminating All Might.
The complete line-up unveiled for this first wave of Funko POP My Hero Academia 2024 is as follows:
- POP #1354 of All Might in full use of the "Texas Smash", a POP quite different from those featuring him in his blue superhero costume;
- POP #1522 of Dabi surrounded by flames, available in a classic version and also in a Glow in the Dark version, which gives the POP a superb effect;
- POP #1523 of Re-Destro in full use of his stress alter during the attack. The character is shown in his black suit, green shirt and tie;
- POP #1524 of Ochaco Uraraka available with a Chase variation and shown as she attempts to defy gravity to oppose the attack and defend herself and her classmates;
- Mirko POP #1525 (Rumi Usagiyama) fights to protect the students. Represented just as faithfully in her superheroine costume with the moon symbol on her torso;
- POP #1526 of Tomura Shigaraki shown seated in his armchair with his brace on his left leg and prosthesis in his hand;
- POP #1527 of Tomura Shigaraki, this time with a wide, bloody smile. The POP is very well done and highlights the demonic side of the character;
- POP #1528 of Katsuki Bakugo, the student trying to tame his explosion and defend the school alongside his classmates.
One of Funko POP's biggest sets
With almost 150 POP figures, My Hero Academia is fast becoming one of the biggest Funko POP sets in animation, and in general too...
Surfing on the first 6 seasons, Funko has found inspiration, going so far as to reproduce certain characters several times over, up to more than a dozen POPs for a single character!
In the top 3 of the most "popified" anime characters, we find, unsurprisingly :
- Deku / Izuku with no fewer than 16 figures (represented as superheroes or civilians);
- All Might, who owes it to his position as #1 superhero, with no fewer than 14 POPs, including a gigantic 45cm figure the height of the character;
- Ochaco, Katsuki and Tomura complete the podium with 6 POPs each.
But that's not all! Funko has also opted for themed sets based on certain story arcs, such as the episode centered on the baseball match between the Orcas and the Lionels, or the "League of Villains", an assembly that recreates the "villains" HQ with 6 figures.
All in all, MHA is just nipping at the heels of another animation heavyweight in terms of number of figurines, none other than Dragon Ball Z, but it may well be overtaken by 2024...
