POP action figure of Ryuk #217
Manga, especially shônens, often include a mascot to embellish the cast of the main characters. The said mascot is usually cute and serves as a guide to the hero. If, indeed, Ryuk will serve as a devious guide to Light Yagami, it is not for all that one could qualify him as cute.
Ryuk is what we call a Shinigami, literal translation of "god of death". This one comes from a world apart where the gods of death, in charge of killing humans by writing a name in their Death Note, are bored to death. The landscape of their universe is only a devastated desert and the means to occupy their immortal days are rare and boring.
Like Light, Ryuk is also bored in his world. And because he doesn't like to be bored, he will deliberately drop an extra Death Note that he had managed to obtain by deceiving the king of the Shinigami. This notebook, with its monstrous powers, will then fall on the path of Light Yagami, a brilliant Japanese high school student who, knew how to put the Death Note to use.
The law surrounding the Shinigami specifies that a god of death, when he drops his notebook on Earth, must remain with it until the death of its new holder. Ryuk, only visible to those who have touched his Death Note, will become the macabre spectator of Light's murderous drift. Light who, from then on, will only be for him a way to entertain himself. And this entertainment, then, will not fail to satisfy him so much the reversals of situation will be intense. Being ourselves spectators of Death Note, we are, unwillingly, like Ryuk who, like us, enjoys the scenario that unfolds before him.
Thousands of people will have died for the only purpose that a god of death can have fun. And this one, then, will not fail to repeat the experience when, after the events of Death Note, he will put the evil notebook in the hands of another student for a few weeks only.
As you might expect, the Funko POP figure of Ryuk from Death Note is obviously equipped with an apple on his left hand. The character, despite his sinister appearance, is indeed very playful and greedy, loving apples from the human world, those from his world tasting like sand. The apple is the only accessory worn by Ryuk's Funko POP that has a bright color. The rest of his body, in fact, is as dark as his purposes are sordid and tragic.
The Ryuk POP figure is a huge demon with a sinister look. Yellow eyes, blue complexion; his clothes, made of leather, with a pronounced gothic style, seem to have been sewn on his skin, reinforcing the horrific side of the character. This character then, the POP figure of Ryuk does not fail to restore it to its main expression: his smile. Ryuk, all along Kira's epic, will be a smiling monster, constantly multiplying his grins as he will enjoy a tragic plot of which he will have been the author.
