Five figures have been announced for December 2026, and one of them is not really a standard character figure. Funko is releasing Mikey alongside the line that changed the course of the movie, in a special format of its own. The rest of the wave is just as carefully chosen.
A sequel officially in development
The timing is no accident. Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel to The Goonies is in development, with Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus producing for Amblin, Lauren Shuler Donner serving as executive producer, and Potsy Ponciroli writing the screenplay.
The detail that matters: Chris Columbus is the man who wrote the 1985 movie. Forty years later, he is returning on the production side. Richard Donner, who directed the original and had long been reluctant about sequel projects, died in July 2021.
No director is attached yet, and the project remains in development. But after decades of rumors, this is the first time a studio has officially put its name behind it.
Mikey and his quote – POP #2167
The most distinctive piece in the wave. Funko places it in the Pop! Sayings line, where the figure is accompanied by a speech bubble featuring a quote from the movie.
And they picked the right one: « Down here it's our time. It's our time down here. » Mikey says it beneath the Fratellis' restaurant, at the wishing well, when the others want to climb back up and go home. It is the speech that turns a children's treasure hunt into something bigger, and it remains one of the lines viewers still quote forty years later.
The Sayings format is larger than the average POP, thanks to the speech bubble. Funko presents Mikey as the true leader of the group, which is accurate, but what this figure is really selling is the quote.
Data and Chunk, two pillars of the group
The official names contain a surprise: Funko uses their full names, the ones almost nobody ever calls them.
- Data – POP #2163: officially Data (Richard Wang). The group's inventor, described by Funko as always ready to pull out one of his homemade gadgets to get everyone out of trouble. His failed inventions provide half the movie's jokes and the other half of its rescues.
- Chunk – POP #2164: officially Chunk (Lawrence Cohen). Funko sums him up in three words: lovable, loyal, and never short of unbelievable stories. He is the character behind the Truffle Shuffle, but also the one who sets the entire final act of the movie in motion.
Two supporting characters on paper, two major drivers of the plot in practice.
Mama Fratelli and One-Eyed Willy, the two obstacles
The other two releases are antagonists, and they mirror each other.
- Mama Fratelli – POP #2165: the criminal matriarch who rules her family with an iron fist. Funko describes her as standing between the Goonies and their treasure at every turn. She is the immediate threat, the one chasing them.
- One-Eyed Willy – POP #2166: the pirate whose hidden treasure and ingenious traps set the entire adventure in motion. The official description notes that his legacy still looms over the Astoria coastline, a nice way of acknowledging that the filming location itself has become a pilgrimage site for fans.
One is a living obstacle, the other has been dead for three centuries. Together, they frame the entire structure of the movie.
What Funko did not release
What is missing is just as revealing as what is included. No Brand, no Mouth, no Andy, no Stef. The group is incomplete, and that does not look like an oversight.
Funko has chosen the characters who move the plot forward rather than simply those who populate it: the one who decides to keep going, the one who builds the tools, the one who triggers the final act, and the two who stand in their way. This wave is built like a summary of the movie, not a group photo.
The trade-off is that a second wave will be needed to complete the gang. If the sequel moves forward, it will probably arrive alongside it.
