A few days after revealing POP figurines from The Godfather II, Funko takes us back to the New York mafia with the other great classic of the genre: Goodfellas!
Released in 1990, with a star-studded cast (Robert de Niro / Ray Liotta / Joe Pesci) and the success we all know, it's a wonder the film didn't join the Funko POP family sooner. No matter, Funko has just unveiled something to immortalize the film on its shelves.
The first Goodfellas Funko POPs
To mark the occasion, Funko has directly unveiled 4 figurines of the characters. The members of the mafia are dressed in their impeccable Italian suits, and their attitudes, even in POP, betray certain character traits.
Naturally, we find the four main characters, starting with young Henry Hill, who is about to make his initiation into the criminal world and embark on a veritable descent into hell... The POP reflects the character's image, with his slicked-back hair and "I'll take care of it" smirk.
Second POP, the Tommy Devito figure, always impeccably dressed and shown with his hands clasped as he appears to be delivering his "Who's funny now?" line.
Funko also offers a POP of Jimmy Conway, Tommy's sidekick, shown in his gray suit and with a less austere expression than his comrades, although he's not the most tender-hearted!
Finally, the last POP figure is dedicated to the redoubtable Paulie Cicero, who recruits Henry. Dressed in his trademark suit, Paulie exudes the aura of a seasoned mobster, with the stern look that made him such a respected character in the film. Funko left no stone unturned: perfect suit, signet ring on finger and even the little dark circles under the character's eyes.
Nothing to say for this line-up, even if it perhaps lacks a little feminine touch, and we can only regret that Funko didn't also offer a POP of Karen...
Direction New York in the 70s
The ruthless criminal world of New York in the 70s comes to life in the film "Goodfellas", directed by Martin Scorsese. Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, takes us on his meteoric rise within the Mafia, fascinated by the glamour and power that accompany this way of life.
Henry, still a teenager, is recruited by the redoubtable Paulie Cicero, played by Paul Sorvino, to become part of the Mafia family. Guided by Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), he quickly discovers the inner workings of organized crime. Loyalty and betrayal become central to his existence, as he climbs the ladder at breakneck speed.
The film offers a raw, realistic insight into the daily life of gangsters. Armed robbery, extortion and score-settling are commonplace. The intensity is ratcheted up a notch with the explosive brutality of Tommy, an unpredictable character who instills terror around every corner. His uncontrollable behavior creates constant tension, making us fear the worst at any moment.
The tumultuous relationships between the characters are also at the heart of the plot. Henry and Jimmy's long-standing friendship is tested by difficult moral choices and unexpected betrayals. Henry's wife, Karen (Lorraine Bracco), plays a crucial role as a helpless witness to the events unfolding around her, adding a complex emotional dimension to the story.
Scorsese makes spellbinding use of music to enhance the film's atmosphere. Rock'n'roll classics from the 60s and 70s become the soundtrack to the characters' turbulent lives, creating a perfect symbiosis between audio and visual!
As the story progresses, Henry's downward spiral becomes inevitable. Goodfellas offers a ruthless look at the ephemeral nature of power and loyalty in the ruthless world of the mafia, captivating audiences from start to finish.
