Funko celebrates the 85th anniversary of this cinematic masterpiece with a dozen POPs from The Wizard of Oz. Among the announcements are some very nice surprises, with POPs available in a variety of variations.

While Funko already offered POPs based on the film, with the main characters already available, they were almost all released between 2011 and 2013... In other words, an eternity ago! Now, fans of this cinematic classic will be able to collect the characters in "new generation" POP figurines with much better looks and details.

Here's a look back at the announcement and the surprises Funko has in store for us on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.

11 new figures, including some very nice surprises

To celebrate the 85th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, Funko didn't do things by halves, unveiling a total of 11 new figures, including some very, very nice surprises, such as an exceptional POP Town...

Let's start at the beginning with the Dorothy & Toto POPs: the young girl is represented accompanied by her faithful companion, the dog Toto. The figurine is perfect: Dorothy Gale in her Vichy dress, hair bow and little shoes. She carries Toto in her arms, as well as her little wicker basket.

Note: Funko has announced two POPs for Dorothy and Toto, one of which would be a "Variant Color", but the visuals don't show much difference...

Next come the three characters who will cross young Dorothy's path:

• Cowardly Lion in search of courage;
• Scarecrow, looking for brains;
• Tin Man, looking for a heart.

Now it's the turn of the film's witches to be "popified" with figurines of Glinda the Good Witch, who guides the young girl on her journey, as well as the Wicked Witch, the main antagonist who wants to take Dorothy's shoes...

The Wicked Witch is not alone, as Funko has also unveiled a POP figure of Winged Monkey, the little creatures she sends to attack Dorothy and her friends.

Note: for the lucky ones, Cowardly Lion and Winged Monkey POPs are available in Chase "metallic" versions.

Finally, the last announcement is a very nice surprise. In fact, two surprises in one:

• the POP Town which reproduces the setting of the Emerald City;
• the accompanying figurine is that of... the Wizard of Oz!

Yes, the mysterious and powerful wizard FINALLY has a POP figure of his own. Until now, while all the other characters have been available, the Wizard of Oz had never been "popified" by Funko, adding to the mystery surrounding the character!

So it's now possible to collect the complete cast, with magnificent, highly faithful POPs. The Emerald City and all the characters from the film will look great on your shelves.

A tribute to this classic film

Directed in 1939 by Victor Fleming, and adapted from the novel of the same name by L. Franck Baum, The Wizard of Oz is a musical film that has established itself as one of cinema's greatest classics.

The story follows Dorothy Gale, a young orphan living in Kansas, who is swept away by a tornado to the magical land of Oz. Accompanied by her dog Toto, she sets out to find her way home. Along the way, she meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion who join her on her journey. Together, they brave many dangers and confront the wicked witch...

The film tackles such powerful themes as friendship, courage, self-acceptance, dreams and imagination. While its soundtrack made the film a huge success from the outset, it's also thanks to its special effects, sets and costumes that it has established itself in popular culture.
