POP action figure of Robert Daly #943
USS Callister is the first episode of the fourth series in the Black Mirror series. In this episode, we follow Robert Daly, a reclusive but talented programmer and co-founder of a popular massively multiplayer online game. He is bitter about the lack of recognition from his colleagues and takes out his frustrations by simulating a Star Trek-like space adventure in the game, using his colleagues' DNA to create digital clones of them.
As captain of the starship USS Callister, Daly is able to give orders to his colleagues, bending them to his will and abusing them if they do not submit to his command. When Daly brings newly hired Nanette Cole into his game, she encourages the other clones to revolt against Daly.
Captain Robert Daly and his crew are aboard a spaceship, the USS Callister, in an attempt to defeat their archenemy Valdack. They destroy Valdack's ship, but he escapes. The crew celebrates, with Daly kissing the two female crew members.
In real life, Daly is a technical director at Callister Inc, a company he co-founded with James Walton, the company's CEO. Callister produces the multiplayer game Infinity, in which users control a spaceship in a simulated reality. Daly is treated poorly by his co-workers, who seem identical to Captain Daly's crew. New programmer Nanette Cole praises Daly's work on Infinity, but the more assertive Walton interrupts her to give him a tour. When Daly returns home, he opens a development version of Infinity that has been modified to look like his favorite television show, Space Fleet. As Captain Daly, he berates the crew members and strangles a submissive Walton.
After employee Shania Lowry warns Cole to beware of Daly, he takes a discarded cup of Cole's coffee and uses his DNA to replicate his consciousness in his construct. Cole wakes up aboard the USS Callister, confused and distraught. Lowry explains to him that they are digital clones of Callister Inc. personnel. Cole tries to escape the ship but is beamed back to the bridge. She refuses to obey Daly's orders, who removes her facial features, suffocates her, until she gives in.
