POP action figure of Mushu #630
Mushu is the little dragon in the Disney cartoon Mulan, inspired by a Chinese legend. The cartoon tells the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man to go into battle in place of her old and wounded father. Indeed, following the invasion of the Huns, led by their leader Shan Yu, the emperor decrees the mobilization of one man per family. To honor his family, Fa Zhou, Mulan's father accepts the conscription order. Mulan refuses to allow his father to fight for honor, as he would lose his life at his age. So in the night, after praying to the ancestors, she makes the decision to go in her father's place. She cuts her hair with a sword, ties her hair back in buns with a green ribbon, takes her father's armour. She takes her father's conscription order and replaces it with a brooch with a flower. Then she leaves for the military centre on her horse Khan.
The ancestors of the Fa family then come out of their sleep. They entrust Mushu, a former guardian of the family, with the mission of awakening the great stone dragon to protect Mulan. Mushu was once the guardian of the Fa family, but since he failed to protect a family member, he has been demoted and is now a gong ringer for the ancestors. The eldest of the ancestors does not consider him a real dragon, Mushu suffers from this lack of consideration.
Mushu is very self-confident and rather impulsive and impatient. He is striving to become one of the guardians of the family again. When the ancestors ask him to awaken the stone dragon to bring Mulan back, he is offended that he is not asked to bring her back. In his attempts to awaken the stone dragon, Mushu mistakenly crushes it. He makes the ancestors believe that the dragon is wide awake and that he has gone to protect Mulan. By talking with Cri-Kee, he will then help Mulan to make her a war hero to regain her place as the family's guardian. Mushu will also be very loyal with a good heart when he follows Mulan to stop the Huns. He is always accompanied by Cri-Kee, Mulan's lucky cricket. These two characters form an adorable duo often at odds, Cri-Kee is more cautious and altruistic while Mushu is impulsive and self-centered. From a physical point of view, Mushu has the characteristics of a traditional Chinese dragon: he has no wings, a long tail and a long moustache.
On this Pop! figurine, Funko represents Mushu with his famous gong. This figurine is very similar to the character since we can recognize the two colors of his body, yellow and orange, his long tail and yellow moustache. On his face, he has his dragon snout, his big black eyes and his little blue horns that we can see in the cartoon. He wears a big smile that shows his white and sharp teeth and gives him a very expressive face, quite playful and faithful to the character. And finally, his right hand holds the golden gong, his left hand the black and beige gong stick. This figurine is well made and gives the impression that there is a movement of the stick hitting the gong.
