The Smurfs are those little blue beings living hidden in the forest in their mushroom-shaped houses. The community is quite large and all are active in their passions while participating in community life.

If the Smurfs are all physically very close (except for a few visible character traits or accessories), Papa Smurf is the only one with a more easily recognizable physique. Indeed, he is the only one whose outfit (hat and pants) is red and he also has a large white beard that shows his advanced age. It would seem that Papa Smurf is 542 years old!

In the comic book, Papa Smurf represents the authority of the village and his influence on the community is indisputable. While he regularly gets annoyed by the nonsense of some Smurfs, Papa Smurf is always ready to help others, especially when they are in danger. He is also the mentor of some characters such as Brainy Smurf who learns from him.

Another of Papa Smurf's peculiarities is that he is the only one who can communicate easily with humans, he also maintains some friendly relations with other alchemists who are humans.
