Mikasa Ackerman appears in the first episode of the Attack of the Titans as the sister of Eren Jaeger, the protagonist of the story. Very early in the story, we learn that Mikasa Ackerman is actually Eren Jaeger's adopted sister. Eren is the most important person to Mikasa. Indeed, he is the one who saved her from death when both of her parents were murdered. After the loss of her family, the young girl, then barely 10 years old, started a new life with the Jaeger family. Mikasa Ackerman, discreet but endowed with a strength that defies all rationality, will be forever marked by this drama. From now on, she will have only one idea in mind: to protect her new family.

The Attack of the Titans describes a world in which humanity lives enclosed within walls to protect itself from a great threat: the titans. There are three walls that protect humans from these awful creatures: Maria Wall, Rosa Wall, and Sina Wall. In 845, while Mikasa and his adoptive family lived peacefully in the Shiganshina District, the Maria Wall was stormed by titans. This dramatic event led to the death of Mikasa's adoptive mother, who was devoured by a titan in front of Eren and Mikasa.

After this incident, Eren and Mikasa, along with their childhood friend Armin, find themselves within the walls of the Rosa Wall. The three protagonists decide to commit themselves to the Human Army, to defeat the titans and restore dignity to humanity. Unlike Eren and Armin, Mikasa excels in all areas. So much so, that she will end up ranked 1st in her class. Once her military training is completed, she joins the exploration battalion with Eren, with the sole purpose of protecting him. Many mysteries surround this character, in particular her surname "Ackerman" which conceals many secrets...
