POP Uncle Sam (American History)

Uncle Sam (or Uncle Sam) is one of the best known personifications of the United States. Symbol of the American government, or propaganda for military enlistment, this fictional character inspired by President Andrew Jackson is one of the most popular images worldwide.

If when we talk about Uncle Sam, you immediately imagine the character in the colors of the American flag, do you know his origin? It dates back to the War of 1812 when American soldiers who received crates of meat marked "U.S." from a supplier named Samuel Wilson had fun interpreting the initials as those of Uncle Sam's crates! A hundred years later, cartoonist Thomas Nast was the first to draw a poster of Uncle Sam. The image became popular again with army recruitment posters during the two world wars, on which the character was depicted under the slogan "I want you for U.S. army"!
