Uncle Sam (or Uncle Sam) is one of the best known personifications of the United States. Symbol of the American government, or propaganda for military enlistment, this fictional character inspired by President Andrew Jackson is one of the most popular images worldwide.

It dates back to the War of 1812 when American soldiers who received crates of meat marked "U.S." from a supplier named Samuel Wilson had fun interpreting the initials as those of Uncle Sam's crates!
