The green goggles on his forehead and the blue board under his arm come from a 2006 game. Sonic with Blue Star (#1346) recreates his Sonic Riders look, from that February, along with his starting Extreme Gear. It's the first time one of those boards has made it into the Funko catalog.
Blue Star, the board everyone picked first
Sonic Riders swapped karts for Extreme Gear, flying boards that burn through air the way other racers burn through gas. Blue Star is Sonic's, the one under your feet in your very first race: a balanced board with no real strength or weakness, built for learning. It survived both sequels, Zero Gravity in 2008 and Free Riders in 2010.
Its origin has never been settled. The in-game info credits it to Robotnik Corp., Eggman's company, while a story mode cutscene shows Tails building it. So the hero's board came either from his best friend's workshop or from his worst enemy's factories, and Sega never corrected either version. Nobody seems to mind, which is pretty typical of the series.
Why Funko is thinking about it now
After Free Riders, the series stopped. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, released in September 2025, put Extreme Gear back on the track as a full vehicle class, quick in drifts and fragile on any impact. The game starts its second year on November 3, 2026, with a new content season Sega announced for Sonic's 35th anniversary. The board is back in the news right as the figure arrives.
It isn't alone from the Riders world either. Jet (#1117), leader of the Babylon Rogues and Sonic's main rival in the game, got his Pop in August 2025. With Blue Star, the two opponents of that first race finally share the catalog.
An exclusive in line with the spin-offs
The figure is exclusive to the specialty retail channel, with the Special Edition sticker on the box. It fits a recent run of accessorized Sonics drawn from the spin-offs, such as Sonic with Caliburn (#1106), the talking sword from Sonic and the Black Knight.
Our take: Wave and Storm are missing
I like the choice, much less the execution. Digging up Sonic Riders, a game critics greeted coldly in 2006, instead of yet another classic Sonic is exactly the right move for a license that already counts more than seventy entries. But the board is tucked under his arm like a skateboard left by the front door. The whole identity of the game is riding on it. A Sonic balanced on Blue Star, even on a stand, would have told a story; this one is waiting for the bus.
The real gap is elsewhere. Jet has had his Pop for a year, Sonic now has his board, but the other two Babylon Rogues still don't exist at Funko: Wave, the swallow mechanic who builds the team's gear, and Storm, the albatross who plays the muscle. A trio of sky pirates with only one member released is a trio that doesn't exist on a shelf.
Sonic with Blue Star is up for pre-order, with release announced for January 2027.
